PROVENANCE
This wallpaper is of a suzani embroidery, which is a classic Central Asian textile characterized by flowers and meandering vines, made with a tambour hook. These textiles are traditionally used as wall hangings or as a woman's marriage dowry, as the fruit designs are symbolic of fertility. The suzani's decorative embroidery is also thought to possess a protective element.
About St. Frank
CONCEPT
THE WAY WE WORK
We are creating a home brand built for a new consumer. We believe your space should share your story and values - exceptional product, unique origins, and ethical sourcing. PRODUCT
UNIQUE LUXURY WARES
Our products are made with the finest materials by artisans, small businesses, and vintage dealers around the world. We design and finish each piece with the utmost care. Each item in our collection carries a cultural history of the community from which it originates. We share the stories behind every work with you to celebrate and preserve these traditional crafts.
MODEL
SOCIAL IMPACT
Our line consists of three parts - contemporary handmade, vintage, & printed pieces. We work with artisans in under-resourced settings, supporting quality jobs & preserving heritage crafts. Vintage items are sourced from small businesses in these settings, upcycling to minimize our environmental footprint. Print reproductions share and celebrate the stories behind the traditional craft methods that inspired the patterns.
ARTISAN SPOTLIGHT
INSIDE THE WORKSHOP
Our red clay pieces are handmade in a female-led cooperative in Oaxaca, Mexico. The clay is hand-formed without a potter’s wheel. Then, each piece is finished with a red clay slip. In pre-Hispanic times, this technique was used to create compels, a tool used in the kitchen to cook tortillas. Today, Oaxacan women continue to practice this technique, passed down from generation to generation.
