Beautifully crafted Chardonnay/Chenin Still White Wine from South Africa. <0.5% ABV

Produced using 55% Chenin Blanc and 45% Chardonnay grapes harvested from dry-land farmed vineyards in the Western Cape region. The vineyards are strategically planted on south-west facing slopes to capture cool breezes from the Atlantic Ocean and cold Benguela current. Deep soils from decomposed granite, clay rich, with good drainage.

With 14 days fermentation at 14-15°C, the grapes and juice are handled reductively to prevent oxidation and lock in fruitiness. The wine is left on lees for 2 months to add complexity. The wine is then dealcoholized by way of a gently spun cone technology. This is done under vacuum and at low temperature to ensure that the wine retains its distinctive body, colour and flavour.

Bottles are 750ml. Available in single for £9.95 or a case of six for £59.70. Alternately, subscribe and save for 10% off.

Questions

Q: Is 0.5% really non-alcoholic? if you are trying to be totally off alcohol?

A:

There's not really a practical difference between 0.0% and less than 0.5% ABV products. The US government definition of non-alcoholic includes all products below 0.5% (and this is called alcohol-free in the UK and EU). The reason for this is that MOST products in the kitchen actually contain alcohol, where most people typically think it's just things like non-alcoholic beer and kombucha.

In fact, bread, fruit juice, and even things like traditional colas and flavoured sparkling waters all have >0.0% ABV. Ethanol is the most common transport for flavourings in food, and many foods beyond that in the kitchen can start early stages of fermentation such as bananas and soft fruits like plums and apricots.

Your liver breaks alcohol into ketones at a rate of about 17ml/hour (17ml alcohol is present in 1 pint of 3% ABV beer).

One litre of a <0.5% ABV beverage contains 5ml alcohol, so the average adult would have to consume more than 3.4 litres per hour of a <0.5% ABV beverage to be accumulating alcohol in the blood faster than the liver is able to metabolise it. That’s more than 6 pints per hour!

In reality, you would then have to keep this rate of consumption up for hours on end to have any alcoholic effects take hold. In simplistic terms an adult cannot get intoxicated on a <0.5% ABV drink and at that level it’s no more harmful than a glass of juice.

Q: Is this vegan/halal/organic?

A: Noughty Blanc is not certified vegan but it is vegan friendly. No animal by-products are used in the filtration process, which is where a wine would normally most likely come into contact with a non-vegan production element.

Our still wines - Noughty Rouge and Noughty Blanc, are produced in South Africa where the winemaker ensures minimal intervention in the growing and harvesting of the grapes.

Our sparking wines are grown in Spain and produced in Germany and they are certified organic, vegan and halal. Our stills wines are grown using minimal intervention but don't carry an official organic certification.
